Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in the English county of South Yorkshire. The city's name comes from the Sheaf River, which runs through it. It was formerly part of Yorkshire's West Riding, and several of its southern suburbs, like Mosborough, were moved to the city council from Derbyshire. It's 6 miles (9.7 kilometres) south of Rotherham, 40 miles (64 kilometres) east of Manchester, 38 miles (61 kilometres) south of Leeds, and 44 miles (71 kilometres) north of Nottingham. It is the largest town in South Yorkshire, as well as Yorkshire's second-largest city (by population).

The city is located in the eastern Pennine foothills, as well as the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, Porter Brook, Rivelin, and Sheaf. Green space covers 61% of Sheffield's total area, while the Peak District national park encompasses a third of the city. In the city, there are more than 250 parks, woodlands, and gardens, with an estimated 4.5 million trees.
