After travelling to remote Yakushima Island off the southern coast of Japan as deck cargo on an overnight frieghter, we set off before dawn to explore the Anbo Forest Railway, Japan's last operational 762mm gauge cypress railway. The Cedar and Hinoki pine on Yakushima is regarded as some of the best in Japan so the tiny island once boasted four indepent forest railway. Known today as a walking track to access ancient Jomon Sugi, one of the world's oldest Cedars, this long day walk along the railway line is popular with Japanese and international tourists alike.

The very next day, we were invited to ride the railway in the original forest Manager's 'Motor Car', a Railcar that few people knew even existed! See our 'Yakushima Motor Car' video here:

I'm guiding a series of small group, narrow gauge rail tours to Taiwan and Japan. Highlights of the Taiwan tour is a visit to the spectacular Alishan Forest Railway which climbs from sea level to 2.200m in just 75 kilometers and on special occasions, still operates a Shay geared locomotive!
