During the time period of Emperor Ashoka, the Mauryan period showed a transition from wooden architecture to stone ones. He obviously left a big impact on the Mauryan Empire. Many stupas were constructed around the empire and among these are a few well-known ones like the Stupa of Sanchi and the Bharhut Stupa. These stupas were usually constructed to celebrate the achievements of Gautama Buddha and other Buddhist monks. Besides the caves and the stupas, the four-headed lion emblem and the Ashoka Chakra that we see on our Indian currency and our national flag were also adapted from this period.
