CRAZY ways to practice with a metronome!

"Use a metronome!" my teacher always said.

Click, click, click, click, click, click.... sure, this is great for kids, but if you really want to develop your time feel in a way that will help you groove and play together with other people, you need to take it further than "clicking on all beats".

I've had many requests for this video and so I'm FINALLY getting around to it (apologies that it took me this long!).

When I first moved to NYC to study (a long time ago), I was immediately blown away by the incredible time feel that everyone seemed to have when playing jazz. Saxophonist Will Vinson seemed as if he was completely locked in to the rhythm at all times, even through changing meters and drummers who intentionally played over the barline (hint: he WAS completely locked in and still is to this day! Other musicians like Aaron Parks, Miguel Zenon, Thomas Morgan and Obed Calvaire all could do the same thing - and I desperately wanted to be able to do it too.

One of the ways I tried to develop my time feel was by getting creative with a metronome. I took some of the concepts I had learned when studying drum set, and applied them to improvisation on the vibraphone. I also composed songs that had changing time signatures and would practice them against a metronome that simply stayed in 4/4.

These exercises will train YOU to be the source of the beat, instead of relying on the metronome to tell you where it is at all times.
