WHAT DO YACHT CREW DO? A Guide to My Duties as First Officer On Board A Superyacht Under 500GT

A quick search on YouTube or Instagram could lead you to believe that life as a crew member on a yacht is all about travelling and having fun. You may well travel and have fun whilst working on a super yacht, but it doesn’t actually say anything for your yacht crew duties, or yacht crew life in general.

This video is all about my role as a yacht first officer, and should give you a better understanding of what it’s like working on a yacht. A deck officer is one of many yacht crew positions available, and it’s the natural progression after deckhand and bosun.

A day in the life of a yacht crew can vary massively depending on the type of yacht, the time of year, where the yacht is, and whether or not there are guests on board. Some days are challenging, some days are exciting, and some days will make you question why you’re working on yachts and superyachts at all! Regardless, it is my firm belief that a mega yacht career can serve you very well if approached with the right mindset.

Answering the question, “what do yacht crew do” openly and honestly is therefore important, because it ensures that you start yachting with the right expectations. Crew life on a yacht will most likely involve travel and a lot of fun, but these shouldn’t be your only motivations for wanting to work in the super yacht industry.
