Lousios is a river in the Peloponnese,a tributary of Alpheios, with a length of about 23 kilometers.According to tradition,it got its name because the nymphs Neda,Agno and Theisoa bathed the newborn Zeus in its waters.
Gortyna or Gortys was an ancient city of the Arcadians.
Gortyna had a temple of Asclepius with statues of Asclepius and Health,it also had thermal baths.
Inaccessible and isolated, the gorge of Lousios often attracted hermits, who created hermitages in the caves of its cliffs. They built communes and terraces, plowed, cultivated. They searched for God and themselves, alone or in communes, found security, passed on knowledge.
The first ones seem to have come in the 8th or 9th century, according to some scholars or in the 14th–it is difficult to know for sure, since there are no written sources. The hermitages may have reached fifty.
Today, remains of half of them have been found.
