Beyond the four years of dental school, periodontists receive and additional three years of rigorous scientific based training in the study of bone and gum disorders around teeth and implants. What makes this unique is our ability to detect disease a lot sooner than anybody else. When I diagnose a patient with periodontal disease, my first line of advice to them is, you know you're gonna have to get your teeth cleaned every three months for the rest of your life if you want to keep your teeth because there is no magic pill or cure for periodontal disease. There is only a treatment. Because periodontal disease in only treatable not curable, we rely on prevention to maintain patients health and teeth. In this regard, prevention is most effective with a periodontist involved simply because we tend to detect things a lot sooner than probably anybody else.
