‘I don’t think it’s a slow revver, neither is it a fast revver, it’s somewhere in between,’ says skipper Gerrit van Komen about the Deutz RBA8M 528 in the Dutch inland barge Sjanie, on which he sails with Sjanie van Oost. The engine from 1965 has a power of 620 hp at 750 revs per minute. Is it a BAM Deutz? ‘Not in skipper parlance. The BAM Deutzes are the fast revvers, as we call them.’ Skipper Van Komen and his predecessors on the Sjanie increased the ease of use of the engine by making changes to the greasing-system. In the video he shows us the greasing procedure and the use of the original Deutz regulator in the wheelhouse. Then he casts off and sails away to load in the harbor Amsterdam. ‘It’s almost a fast revver, with its ease of use. Only we still have the robustness of a slow revver.
