At the height of its operations, Portal 31 mine employed more than 4000 people. It was owned by the U.S. Coal and Coke Company, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel. The company built the community of Lynch, Kentucky, as a community of miners for Portal #31. It is now open for tours and you can experience the mine by taking the underground mine tour. Tours run from 10am to 4pm.
