Let’s talk about hymens and why painful tampon use or intercourse might not be “just in your head.”

Some women experience extreme discomfort when inserting or removing tampons. Others find intercourse painful or impossible. If that’s familiar, you might have an issue with your hymen and you’re absolutely not alone.

Hymens come in many shapes. In some cases, a small band of tissue (called a hymenal septum) divides the vaginal opening. You might be able to insert a tampon on one side, but find it painful or impossible to remove. This can also make intercourse very difficult.

There’s also something called an imperforate hymen where the hymen completely blocks the vaginal opening. This can prevent periods from flowing, causing intense pain and symptoms like bloating or breast tenderness each month, but no visible bleeding.

Both are treatable with a small, safe surgical procedure. A light anaesthetic, a quick incision, and you can get on with your life, pain-free.
