One of the lesser-known reasons linked to the Titanic ship story is the absence of binoculars for the lookouts on duty. The ship had a pair of binoculars stored away, but the key to the locker was not available. It had accidentally been taken off the ship by a crew member who left before the voyage. Because of this, the lookouts had to rely only on their eyes in the dark, moonless night.

Without binoculars, spotting hazards such as icebergs at a distance was far more difficult. The sea was unusually calm that night, which meant there were no waves breaking at the base of the iceberg to make it easier to see. By the time the iceberg was spotted with the naked eye, the ship was too close to avoid a collision.

Many experts believe binoculars might have given the lookouts extra seconds of warning. Even a short time could have allowed the Titanic to slow down or steer further away. While no single factor caused the tragedy, the missing binoculars remain a small but significant detail in the chain of events that led to the sinking of the Titanic.
