The brown falcon is a bird of prey found widely across Australia. It is usually known for hunting small mammals, reptiles, and insects. But researchers and Indigenous knowledge holders have observed something unusual about this bird — a habit of spreading fire.

Reports suggest that brown falcons, along with some other raptors like black kites, have been seen picking up burning sticks from wildfires and dropping them into unburned areas. By doing this, they cause the fire to spread. The reason seems to be hunting: as the fire drives insects, rodents, and lizards out of cover, the falcons swoop down and catch them more easily.

This behavior has been documented in Aboriginal stories for generations, and recent studies have provided more evidence of it. Scientists call it “fire-spreading” or “fire-foraging” behavior. While it might sound destructive, for the falcons it is simply a clever survival strategy.

It also shows how animals can use tools and natural forces in unexpected ways. In this case, fire is turned into a hunting aid. For humans, it is another reminder of how closely wildlife behavior is tied to the ecosystems where they live.
