Evolutionary physiology of amphibious fishes - Dr. Andy Turko

Описание к видео Evolutionary physiology of amphibious fishes - Dr. Andy Turko

Most fishes spend their entire lives in water. However, around 1% of fishes are amphibious and can make use of the terrestrial environment. These fishes have long been fascinating to biologists, as they transition between two of the most physically divergent environments that can be experienced by any animal. In my Rock Talk, I will first discuss why fishes have evolved to be amphibious, and how this transition may occur. Then, I will explain some of the physiological strategies used by highly amphibious fishes to survive on land for months at a time.

About Dr. Turko
I am a comparative and evolutionary physiologist. My research program investigates how animals integrate physiological and behavioral responses to changing environments, how these responses evolve, and what happens when these responses feed back upon one another. A major focus is understanding the mechanics and plasticity of fish respiration and what this means for performance in different environments. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. I also spent time as a postdoc at McMaster University and the University of Windsor, and I completed my PhD at the University of Guelph.

Rock Talk #8, 2023 Season
Recorded: July 25, 2023

About Rock Talks
Our Rock Talk Seminar Series is a long-standing and well-loved tradition at SML. Historically, faculty members and guest speakers would gather with students on Appledore Island's rocky shoreline (giving the Rock Talk series its name) to present on a wide range of topics related to natural history, ecology, biology, and more. To stay connected with our community following the pandemic, we transitioned our Rock Talks online and have featured guest speakers from across the world. On our channel, you will find recordings from past seminars.

Please note: All Rock Talks begin at 8pm on Tuesdays for the 2023 season. You must register for the live presentations ahead of time, and all registration links will be shared on our website. We look forward to seeing you at our next Rock Talk!
