The origin and evolution of cnidarian stinging cells - Dr. Leslie S. Babonis

Описание к видео The origin and evolution of cnidarian stinging cells - Dr. Leslie S. Babonis

Cnidocytes are the explosive stinging cells unique to cnidarians (corals, jellyfish, etc). There are over 30 different types of stinging cells, some of which are specialized for prey capture while others play a role in defense. These unusual cells are among the most iconic examples of an evolutionary novelty (a new trait) but the mechanisms driving the development of the stinging cell are poorly understood. Using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing in the starlet sea anemone (Nematostella vectensis) we show how a single gene can transform one cell type into another, giving rise to truly novel functions.

Dr. Babonis is an evolutionary developmental biologist broadly interested in understanding the factors that promote the origin and diversification of novel traits. Her lab group uses the dynamic processes of embryogenesis, morphogenesis, and regeneration to characterize the cellular and molecular events that drive the development of new cell and tissue types. One of her favorite novelties is the cnidocytes (stinging cells) of cnidarians (jellyfish, corals, sea anemones) but because she is interested in identifying overarching rules governing the evolution of novelty, she is always on the lookout for new systems and new traits to study.

Rock Talk #3, 2023 Season
Recorded: June 20, 2023

About Rock Talks
Our Rock Talk Seminar Series is a long-standing and well-loved tradition at SML. Historically, faculty members and guest speakers would gather with students on Appledore Island's rocky shoreline (giving the Rock Talk series its name) to present on a wide range of topics related to natural history, ecology, biology, and more. To stay connected with our community following the pandemic, we transitioned our Rock Talks online and have featured guest speakers from across the world. On our channel, you will find recordings from past seminars.

Please note: All Rock Talks begin at 8pm on Tuesdays for the 2023 season. You must register for the live presentations ahead of time, and all registration links will be shared on our website. We look forward to seeing you at our next Rock Talk!
