Today I want to review paintings by JOHN YARDLEY! (:
And - I'll also create a STUDY based on the main painting we will review.
I hope you enjoy!

🎨JOHN YARDLEY 🎨

This artist has a very interesting life story. He was a banker, and in his early 50s he decided to devote himself completely to art.

I assume he painted on the side through all of these years, as his skill is incredible.

What I love about him is how he works in different sections. He doesn't care about having the washes merge into one another as much as possible.
He works on different sections as he sees fit.

I find this approach very freeing.

Another thing that makes his art stand out is that he does lots of paintings of interiors, which I find to be fascinating.

You can see more of his work in these excellent APV videos:

12:54 - Recreating the painting

🎨MAIN PAINTING OBSERVATIONS 🎨

1. Composition - dominance of right side building. Lots of details on it
Then one on the left, a little farther back.

2. Beautiful simplification under awnings and sheds. Crates and different details.

3. Boats - main point of interest. Very varied and interesting.
Notice how he places sharp dry brush next to wet-in-wet strokes in the shadows / reflections.

4. Negative painting - lots of it around the highlights - cars on the left, sheds, boats, sails.

5. Interesting light and shadow - especially on the buildings.
Interesting sharp angles.

6. Circular eye motion (at least for me) - Boats -- Building on top (large door and up) -- building on left -- down through tree -- car -- back to boats.

🎨CONCLUSION 🎨

I hope you enjoyed this review and recreation, and perhaps even learned something new!
This is such an interesting artist with great skills and artwork.

I hope to review many more.

I wish you all the best, and we'll talk again really soon.
