Ewhurst Green - 1940's Southern Railway

The import of Bananas moved from Hull to Southampton in 1933, with the Southern Railway building a fleet of (stone-coloured) steam-hearted Banana vans from 1935-on. Even then, (bauxite) vans needed to be hired in from the LNER.

The Southern's coaches usually ran in fixed formations sometimes strengthened with loose coaches and /or catering cars. Livery here is a mix of pre-war Olive (later not lined) and Malachite Green; both Maunsell High Window and 59' Bulleid 'multidoor' types.
