Jyotirmath (Shankaracharya Math) Uttarakhand | Joshimath & Auli Tourist Places | Kalpavriksha

If you visiting Auli (Uttarakhand), Jyotirmath (Shankaracharya's Math) in Joshimath is a must visit place. Shankaracharya established 4 monasteries and Jyotirmath was first of them. Shankracharya then gave Jyotimath's responsibility to one of his disciple Trotakacharya. Jyotirmath & other Maths were established to teach the importance spiritual life explained in Vedas & Upnishads.

Jyotirmath is located in Joshimath. Few hundred meters from Badrinath highway comes this beautiful monastery. There is Laxmi-Narayana temple at the entry of Jyotirmath. Just right to this temple is a big hall & the divine seat of Shankaracharya is located in this big room. Above this room is Shankaracharya cave where it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya did meditation.

Few meters away from Jyotirmath is Kalp Vriksha. This is 2500 years old auspicious tree. It is said that this divine tree remains evergreen & never sheds even a single leaf by itself. As per stories Adi Shankaracharya sat under Kalpvriksha & worshipped Lord Shiva. Then he installed a Shivlinga here and now there is a Mahadev Temple called Jyoteshwar Mahadev Temple.
