Hi, this is Jessie with Sharp Edges in Oklahoma. And today I wanted to talk about discount blades.

I'm seeing a lot more of these now in both my mobile and mail in clients.

And this one just happens to be black.

They can be many different colors.

Typically they don't have any brand name like this one doesn't.

Or they'll have a name, but it's some name you've never heard of before, or it'll look very similar to a name brand blade, but actually isn't.

I'm seeing these a lot on a lot of apps, which I won't mention, but their initials start with a or t or w.

And I get it. You see a blade for $8 or $10, sometimes $7.

And, it's very tempting.

The issue that I'm running across and groomers I've talked to running across.

These blades are made to be disposable.

they're made for one time use, and then when they go dull, they're, you know, the people who make them, they're thinking is, did you throw them away?

the first thing that I notice is that usually this hardware on the back, the springs and the sockets are really cheap. I generally replace those immediately, um, when I sharpen them because they're usually very weak and won't hold their tension.

also, take a good quality blade, like the Heiniger blade here. These blades are hardened all the way through. are very well made hardened steel and they will cut for months.

lot of these discount blades are what they call case hardened. Case hardened means that,

it's hardened just on the outside and internally the metal is soft. So typically after a couple, ah, sharpening or two, you're down into that soft metal. So this blade may, um, only stay sharp for weeks instead of months. I have actually seen people go through a couple of dogs and say that the blade was dull again once it had been sharpened a few times.

not only does that mean you'll have to get them sharpened more often, but what the frustrating part is that you may have these, let's say this is all. The only blade you have are these discount blades and you've just got them sharpened. Two or three weeks later, they're dull, and the sharpener not going to be around again for several weeks.

So you're working with dull blades and have to buy more blades.

I'm not telling you not to buy these. I'm just educating, trying to educate people and give you some information about them.

we, you know, sharpeners will replace these parts, uh, when they can. Um, some people charge extra for those, so that could be an extra, um, charge you incur,

just keep that in mind. The difference between a blade that will last for months and a blade that, after being sharpened a time or 2, may only last for weeks.
