So, what is Gluten?

Gluten is a general name for the proteins found in wheat, rye, barley and their derivatives. Gluten helps foods maintain their shape, acting as a glue that holds food together.

Where is Gluten found?

Here are some common foods that contain gluten (those that are not specifically labelled as gluten-free):

Wheat-based foods: Bread, pasta, couscous, flour tortillas, crackers, cereals, and baked goods like muffins, cakes, and cookies.

Barley-based foods: Barley is commonly found in beer and malt products, as well as some soups, stews, and malted beverages.

Rye-based foods: Rye bread and some types of rye crackers may contain gluten.

Processed and packaged foods: Gluten can often be hidden in various processed and packaged foods, including soups, sauces, salad dressings, and processed meats, as a thickener or filler.

Pastries and desserts: Many pastries, cakes, pies, and desserts contain wheat flour as a primary ingredient, making them high in gluten.

Pasta and noodles: Traditional pasta is made from wheat flour, so it contains gluten. However, there are gluten-free alternatives made from rice, corn, or other grains.

Baked goods and snacks: Gluten can be present in various snacks like pretzels, crackers, and even some granola bars.

Cereals: Most breakfast cereals contain wheat or other gluten-containing grains, but there are gluten-free options available as well.

Is Gluten bad for you?

For most people, gluten is not harmful and can be consumed without any issues. In fact, whole grains containing gluten can be a part of a healthy diet, providing essential nutrients and dietary fiber. As people age, their digestive systems might become more sensitive, and they may develop certain health conditions. However, gluten itself does not pose a particular risk based solely on age.
There are some specific conditions related to gluten that can cause health problems in certain individuals.

Celiac disease: This is an inherited autoimmune disorder that affects in the USA only 1% of people, in which the ingestion of gluten leads to damage to the small intestine. People with celiac disease must strictly avoid gluten in their diet to prevent complications and improve their health.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity: Some individuals may experience digestive discomfort, fatigue, headaches and other symptoms when they consume gluten-containing foods, even though they don't have celiac disease. This condition is known as non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and its exact cause is still not fully understood.

It's crucial for individuals with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity to carefully read food labels and choose products explicitly labeled as gluten-free.

Gluten Free Trend

It's important to note that the trend of adopting a gluten-free diet has become popular among some individuals without any medical necessity. For these individuals, there is no proven health benefit to avoiding gluten, and doing so may even lead to nutritional deficiencies if not properly managed.

If you suspect you have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional to get a proper diagnosis and dietary recommendations tailored to your specific needs.
