what burns down still doesn't burn out

I wrote this song in 2020. As so many people also feel, so much of what I held dear vanished overnight. All of it showed itself to be vanity. I had to reckon with the transience of life. It’s a mist.

An old pastor of mine brought a classic song to my mind that year- a tune called “God Works in Mysterious Ways.” It was then that the Lord gently showed me that knowing Him was all that could sustain me. It’s something so many of us know in our minds- but it takes the Holy Spirit’s work for us to know that in our hearts. My world may have burned down- but the Holy Spirit had lit a fire within me, a fire that burned with love for my Creator- that wouldn’t burn out. And that could keep me going.

That thought would inspire my 2021 album, Children of the Burning Heart. Two years later, I’m coming back to this song in light of a pretty crippling 2023. What do you know, what was true then is true now- and Christ is still worthy of everything I have.
