Feeling Stuck In Life

At one point or another, we all have moments of feeling stuck in life.
Maybe it's stuckness in our way of thinking, or our way of being. Or perhaps we want to move, do something different, change our situation, but the anxiety, fear and overwhelm are stronger.

If you’re feeling stuck in life right now, or this is something you experience at certain points in your life, this video may resonate with you.

How I Stop Feeling Stuck In Life

"Stuckness" can wear different masks. It may be disguised as rigidity, dissatisfaction, disconnectedness, or lack of motivation.

There are periods in my life where I would feel disconnected from my values. When I make unhealthy choices, or fail to set boundaries in my personal and professional life, I would feel overwhelmed, complain about feeling stuck and slide into victim mode.

Albert Camus once said that, “Life is the sum of our choices.” Everyday, we have the opportunity to choose one over the other, and this directly impacts our circumstance and how we feel about it.

Perhaps you feel stuck in a toxic relationship, an unhealthy pattern, or a demanding job that takes more from you than what you’re willing to give.

We all have different ways of dealing with stuckness. My default reaction was to complain and succumb to a victim mindset. But “when you find yourself in a hole, the best thing you can do is to stop digging.”

So I've been trying a different approach by recognizing what I can or cannot change, then taking action. But taking action may also mean changing my perspective and attitude if I cannot change the situation now.

Avoiding Feeling Stuck In Life

Sometimes, that feeling of stuckness may occur when nothing much happens in our lives. Perhaps we hear of friends, family members, or even strangers who have recently hit one important milestone or achievement after another in their career, relationship, or whatever. And when we look at our lives in comparison to theirs, it may not seem as exciting, as fulfilling, or as extraordinary.

I tend to feel stuck when I think I should be something, someone, or somewhere I am not. It's when I tell myself I should, have to, or must make my life different than it is because others seem to be doing better than me.

This has happened to me so much in the past, where I would force myself to be productive, to do great exploits, and to make things happen. But when I don’t get anywhere I want to be, I label it as being stuck.

And so I wonder - what if being stuck is simply a label I give to the natural rhythm of life? There are seasons in our lives when we are at our most productive or most creative, but there are also times when things are quiet, as with the ebb and flow of life.

There's an old saying that goes, Patience is a virtue. And it has been helpful for me whenever I feel stuck in life. Because oftentimes, we get impatient when we think that others, the world or we are not conforming to our expectations of how we think things should be at that moment.

But when I look at life closely and realize that it flows as it always does, then there’s no stuckness - it’s only a label I’ve created based on what I think my life should look like now.

Perhaps, it isn’t the things themselves that disturb people, but the judgment that they form about them.
