Memorialization is practiced across the world in diverse cultures, religions and regions. Tombstones or gravestones as symbols to mark the graves have been in use since 3,000 B.C.(Roman and Celtic cultures). Although, tombstones form an important part of burial traditions in Christianity and Jewish religions, Islam believes traditionally in humble passing- one without any markers/ tombstones of the final resting place of the deceased.
The tombstones (regardless of religion) were used mostly by nobility and upper classes earlier, common people started using tombstones much later, mostly around 19th century onwards.
Death rituals and ceremonies to mark the passing of life of a loved one have changed in many ways but tombstones are still an important part of memorialization of the deceased.
