Viewer's Fave: Kokni Canteen's fish thali, Panjim, Goa, May 2023

Kokni Canteen has been serving Goan food to Ponjekars since 1972, and remains a very popular place half a century on. A few days back, I took my Bomoicar friend there to try out a thali in Panjim which was recommended by one of our channel viewers.

Location: Kokni Canteen is just 300 m from Panjim church on Dr Dada Vaidya road, which is the street running along Singbal Book House. Continue down this street past Panjim’s Jama Masjid and Big G shopping mall to reach Kokni canteen. On the other side, Kokni Canteen is just 150 m from Shree Mahalaxmi Temple.

Timings: 12.30-3 pm; 7.30-11.30 pm

The decor here celebrates both Panjim city over the decades, and also the food and drink that Panjim loves.

For those who want to linger over their meal, there’s a private table at back and roomier tables next door. The tables in the entrance saloon, and in the side corridor which looks out on the street, are best for quickly eating and leaving.

My friend made a good choice: the fish thali. And i'm having Malvani-style chicken and roti (chapati)

Fish dominates the menu here, which is a collection of Goan curries from tonak (Rs 235) to udidmethi (Rs 235-265) and xacuti (Rs 285 onward). Besides Goan favourites like fodis (fritters/Rs 145-165), rawa fried vegetables, chicken and fish, and fried vadyo (ash gourd wafers/Rs 125), Kokni Canteen also serves some Malvani dishes like chicken (Rs 285) and mutton sukka (Rs 345).

While we were enjoying our meal, the line of those waiting for a table outside was just getting longer and longer.
