Pop-up Book Spread Assembly Vol. 2: A Season in Hell pl. 8

Again, I don’t know if this is of any interest? It’s the cutting and assembling of the 8th spread of my recent artist’s pop-up book A SEASON IN HELL. I entirely handcraft each copy, from home printing to slipcase crafting.

This pop-up typographically illustrates Arthur Rimbaud’s poem « Matin ». It’s the third easiest pop-up to cut and assemble in the book (i.e. it’s relatively very fast to craft). I cropped and trimmed the paper mechanisms until only the very simplest forms remained – in that sense it’s under-engineered on purpose, to the point that a slight change in design would prevent it to work properly. Anyway, it’s all boring details, but to me it’s the most interesting part: creation!

I’ll try to document the making-of / crafting and share more of this assembly time, as I’ll eventually have to craft a full copy anyway ; )

Une fois encore, je ne sais pas si ceci a le moindre intérêt ? C’est le découpage et l’assemblage du 8e tableau de mon livre animé d’artiste récent, UNE SAISON EN ENFER. Je fabrique à la main chaque exemplaire, de l’impression-maison à la confection de l’étui.

Ce pop-up illustre typographiquement le poème « Matin » d’Arthur Rimbaud. C’est le 3e pop-up le plus facile à découper et assembler d u livre (= il est plutôt très rapide à fabriquer). J’ai rogné les mécanismes de papier jusqu’à ce que ne restent que les formes les plus simples – en ce sens il est volontairement « sous-ingénierisé », au point que si on change le design un tant soit peu, ça ne fonctionne plus. Quoi qu’il en soit, ce sont des détails probablement ennuyeux, qui sont pourtant pour moi la partie la plus intéressante : la création !

J’essaierai de documenter la fabrication et de partager plus de ces temps d’assemblage, puisque je devrai de toute façon, à terme, fabriquer un exemplaire complet ; )
