There’s a reason he’s called the Mad Titan, after all. Thanos is one of the most universally-recognized supervillains to ever emerge from Marvel Comics- period. Created by writer-artist Jim Starlin, he debuted in The Invincible Iron Man issue #55 in 1973 and has been a staple of the comic book company’s Villains Pantheon since. From his early days of chasing the Avengers in a rad helicopter to becoming the very embodiment of the Multiverse itself, he’s been at the core of major cross-over storylines involving Marvel’s super-groups for over 50 years. In some depictions, he’s a delusional tyrant, convinced of his glorious purpose and his quest for the Ultimate Prize. In others, he’s a cold-blooded conqueror who’s become indifferent to the very concept of Death itself. So iconic is the legacy that he has served as the inspiration for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s decade-long box office dominance in the form of the Infinity Saga. But where Kevin Feige’s Thanos was a “strong-willed rationalist” whose origins remain obscured in mystery, Jason Aaron and Simone Bianchi’s 2006 mini-series Thanos Rising gives us insight into the psyche of the Destroyer; and it is downright spine-chilling. Thanos’ origin story is disturbing as hell, and involves some gruesome and rather personal deaths. Let’s Explore!
