Welcome to "Dronescaping Britain”.

This video is the first in the series called ‘Magical Landscapes by Drone,’ a collection showcasing landscapes with features that exude a sense of 'Genus Loci' ~ the spirit of place. Some feel vibes from these very special locations, which have been meaningful to humans over aeons.
It may come as a surprise that this truly stunning and magical landscape is actually in southern Britain, although it is extremely remote. Except for hardened ramblers, hikers and anglers, this spot sees few visitors.
This is the land of Y Ddraig Goch, The Red Dragon. From the Mabinogion story, ‘Lludd and Llefelys’, the Red Dragon fights against an invading White Dragon. His shrieks of pain cause women to miscarry, animals to perish and land to become barren. Lludd, the king of Britain, visits his wise brother Llefelys in France for advice. Llefelys tells him to dig a pit in the center of Britain, fill it with mead, and cover it with a cloth. When Lludd enacts this advice, the dragons drink the mead and fall asleep. Lludd wraps them in the cloth and imprisons them at Dinas Emrys in Snowdonia (Welsh: Eryri).
According to the Historia Brittonum, the dragons remained at Dinas Emrys for centuries until King Vortigern attempted to build a castle there. He faced problems, as every night the castle walls and foundations were demolished by unseen forces. When Vortigern consulted his advisers, they told him to sacrifice a boy with no natural father. Vortigern found such a boy who, later, in some texts, was identified as Merlin. Either way, the boy was actually the wisest wizard ever to live. On hearing that he was to be put to death to solve Vortigern’s castle-building problems, the boy dismissed the advisors’ ideas and related the story of the two dragons to the king.
Vortigern decided to excavate the hill, and in doing so, freed the dragons. Thus the battle between the dragons continued, until the Red Dragon finally defeated the White Dragon. The boy offered an explanation, telling Vortigern that the White Dragon was the symbol of the Saxons, while the Red Dragon symbolized Vortigern’s own people.
If it is accepted that Vortigern lived in the 5th century, the people referred to in the story were the British, who, undefeated by the Saxons, became the Welsh. The same story is repeated in Geoffrey of Monmouth's ‘History of the Kings of Britain’, where he adds that the Red Dragon was also a prophecy for the coming of King Arthur. Arthur's father was named Uther Pendragon ('Pendragon': 'Pen' (Head) and 'Dragon', being translated by Geoffrey as "dragon's head").

The landscape shown here is not Snowdonia, but is relatively close in the area of Mid-Wales. This area is part of what is sometimes called the "Desert of Wales" or the “Green Desert of Wales”. It corresponds roughly to the upland area called ‘Elenydd’ in Welsh and is also locally referred to as the Cambrian Mountains. Who knows, there could be Dragons in the hills!

Our flight starts over Llyn Teifi, the source of one of Wales’ greatest rivers, Afon Teifi, in an area straddled high above the coastal plain of Cardigan Bay over to the west. The flight covers magnificent and remote landscape, taking in further lakes and rocky knolls. Rounding a dam, we return home, to find a couple of sheep having a barney before we touch down. Did we spot a sleeping Red Dragon? You will have to see! The shapes and forms of the rocky features on the landscape may indeed betray a sleeping Dragon!
