Chrysler VJ Valiant Holley Sniper Stealth with Hyperspark faults

This Chrysler VJ Valiant Wagon has a Small Block Mopar V8 in it with a big cam. Client wanted the classic to be a bit more drivable so it was decided to fit a Holley Super Stealth with Hyperspark ignition. We chose the polished Holley Super Stealth (up to 650cfm) as it looked the most like a traditional Holley carburettor.

With the Super Stealth we fitted Holley in tank fuel pump with sock, 3/8 inch stainless fuel lines (supply and return), Hyperspark ignition box, distributor and coil with Holley’s pre-wrapped Hyperspark to Sniper wiring loom. Made MSD leads to suit and have a dry cell battery to assure good 12V power supply

Problems began almost instantly as we fitted the Stealth, it was hard to start (OK that can happen) didn’t want to run smoothly we had to give her throttle, would cough and splutter, back fire through the exhaust and the Sniper, the handheld would work then go all red but the Sniper would keep running for a bit, sometimes the handheld would come back on sometimes the whole system would just shut down. On a few occasions it would cut off but the fuel pump would keep pumping and flood the motor making us do a hard reset.

Ran through all the checks:
Checked fuel pressures
electrical connections
swapped out the coil and ignition box
moved coil away from ECU to eliminate RFI etc…

Eventually contacted Holley techs and they ran through the checks with me and said return the unit it was a faulty ECU. We did and ordered another one, low and behold same issue. Ran through the same checks then thought lets just swap out the Super Stealth for the Holley Super Sniper from Shane’s Cuda. Bam instantly ran and tuned, all of the issues were gone

We aren’t going to try three for three and have now fitted a chrome Super Sniper which is running just beautifully. Will finish tuning and locking out the learn then run her up on the Dyno
