Mounting SPS Coral Frags in Your Reef Tank - Horizontal or Vertical?!

Should you mount your freshly cut SPS coral frags vertically, or should you lay them on their side and glue them down horizontally? It's a question as old as the reef aquarium hobby itself - or, at least, since the time we could first maintain SPS corals like our Acropora and Montipora in a normal tank most of us can maintain.

I came across this paper which looks at just that question. With an eye towards restoring coral reefs impacted by coral bleaching, the authors test both horizontal and vertical mounting on artificial reefs that they're building in the Java Sea.

This should help you folks answer this once and for all with your reef tanks! Check out the paper itself as well, it's super approachable and a quick read with more details on how they did the experiments and a lot more detail in the results beyond simply which mounting method works best.
