Research & Treatment Development for Friedreich's Ataxia

Описание к видео Research & Treatment Development for Friedreich's Ataxia

Friedreich's Ataxia is one of the most common forms of Ataxia but is still a relatively rare disease. The National Ataxia Foundation is proud to host this webinar presented by Dr. Marek Napierala on March 17th, 2023. In "Research & Treatment Development for Friedreich's Ataxia", he will teach us how FA is studied and give an overview of the current state of research and drug development for the disease.

For more on FA, you can watch the first video in our series:    • All About Friedreich's Ataxia

About the Speaker:

Dr. Marek Napierala is an Associate Professor at the Department of Neurology and Peter O’Donnell Junior Brain Institute at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry Polish Academy of Sciences in Poznan, Poland. Dr. Napierala has more than 25 years of experience studying the molecular mechanisms associated with human diseases that are caused by the expansion of repeat sequences. His research program, which focuses predominantly on pathogenic GAA repeat sequences expanded in Friedreich’s Ataxia (FRDA), moved to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in 2022.

Dr. Napierala established Friedreich’s Ataxia Cell Line Repository, largest bank of primary FRDA fibroblasts and induced pluripotent stem cell lines that currently house more than 100 lines derived from different FRDA patients. He is involved in the FRDA patient community. His laboratory hosts yearly meetings with FRDA patients and their caregivers.

About the Series:

NAF is producing a series of monthly educational webinars that focus on one type of Ataxia at a time. Each month we will feature a different type. Clinical experts will join us to take a look at the causes and symptoms of the disease, the typical diagnostic journey for those affected, and what to expect for clinical care. Research experts will teach us how the disease is studied and give an overview of the current state of research and drug development.
