'History of the West Highland Line' Documentary Part One

Описание к видео 'History of the West Highland Line' Documentary Part One

Presented by author Gordon D. Webster and featuring the music of popular Scots folk band Reely Jiggered, this 2-part series tells the story of the world-famous West Highland Line; for the very first time in a widely-available, worldwide format. It is the companion piece to the book ‘West Highland Lines: Post-Beeching’ published by The History Press.

The story of the West Highland Line includes tales of secret cargoes, unofficial station stops and other old traditions which would die hard in this remote part of Scotland, well into the era of British Rail. We learn about the building of the line, the end of steam and the drastic cuts implemented around the country by the Beeching Report. We then enter a period of revitalisation in the 1980s, as steam makes a sensational return on the neighbouring Fort William-Mallaig line.

With archive and present-day footage, plus maps and location descriptions.

Produced, edited and directed by Gordon D. Webster.
Gordon graduated with a BA Hons degree in Journalism at Glasgow Caledonian University in 2009 and is a published author of several railway books. He appeared in the second series of the STV series ‘Inside Central Station’ to discuss the impact of the Beeching Cuts on Glasgow’s railways.
