Universal Audio 4-710d : Exploring the 1176 style compression on drums

In this video, we take a look at the 1176 style onboard compressors of the UA 4-710d preamp in a small four mic drum recording setup (stereo room mics later).

To give you some basic ideas of the compressors´ overall possibilities on drums, we have compared the following settings:

- no comp 4 Mics

- SLOW comp 3-5 db GR
- SLOW comp 10-12 db GR

- FAST comp 3-5 db GR
- FAST comp 10-12 db GR

- FAST comp 10 db GR on stereo drum room mics

(Please use good quality headphones or monitoring)

Every setting is demonstrated with both the complete kit sounds, as well as the solo instruments Kick, Snare and Overheads.

The recording setup in detail:

UA 4-710d connected to UA Apollo 8P via Adat

DW birch drum kit
various cymbals (UFIP, Istanbul, Anatolian, Paiste etc)

GIK Acoustics Alpha Wood & Polyfusor panels

Microtech Gefell M300 (overhead mics, spaced pair)
Shure Beta 52a (kick mic)
Shure SM57 (snare mic)
Cascade Fathead (stereo room mics, spaced pair)
