good quality field recorder would work if you just want to pick up the room sound.

My lead singer has a tascam, might be this model. But without the mic kit, just used the onboard condensers.

As long as the room isn't deafening loud it can pick up some pretty passable recordings.

I'll see if I can find a sample that we recorded using it with a full band...

That's me on guitar and harmony vocals (and faking sound effects and synth stuff because our keyboard player wasn't there that day), one of the first times we tried to play it as a band.

If I remember correctly, the field recorder was set up a bit close to the monitors (floor wedges, only serving vocals - guitar/bass from our amps and drums from the open room) so the vocals were a little hot at times and clipped out, but otherwise its a pretty damn good mix of a whole band for review/demo purposes.
