This week on My Classic Car, Dennis travels all the way to Ronneby, Sweden for the Nostalgia Festival, held in the beautiful Brunnspark, dating back to the 1700's. What better way to show off the unbelievably diverse history of the auto drawing from truly all over. It's a real education here. Of course there's Volvos and Saabs, like the '65 Volvo 122S, but they are in the minority here. There's quite a few American cars too, with phenomenal restorations like the '58 Chevy Impala , but there's also a bit of everything here including stuff you won't find back home like the '54 Arnolt Bristol, a Borgward Isabella, and a '64 Ginetta G4.
The '58 Chevy is no finer example of perfection and care in restoration. The first year for the Impala, they came out of the gate right with iconic lines and trim, even for those days. Seemingly fully optioned and a completely stock interior, this is a benchmark. And if it wasn't enough it's towing a matching caravan camper trailer done with equal care. A stunner among stunning vehicles. A truly Cross-Atlantic marriage shows up in the form of a '54 Arnolt Bristol. Clad in American Blue and White, it has the lines of a vintage racer you'd see at LeMans back in the day. Built by American Stanley Arnolt and Italian Coachbuilder Giovanni Bertone, as well as Franco Scaglione, this car has a proud list of motorsport accomplishments both in-period and in the current day. Possibly rarer still, and certainly a new one for Dennis, the '61 Borgward Isabella evokes the feel of a high-class Carmen Ghia, and for good reason. Attending an auto show, Mr. Borgward's wife fell in love with the Carmen Ghia. So...he made this one! People liked it, so he produced it. Two tone, with a great looking interior, Mrs Borgward surely was pleased. Another rarity is the Ginetta G4. At only 99cm high, this compact fiberglass car was taking weight out of the equation on the hunt for speed. Powered by a 4 Cylinder Ford Cortina engine, and Triumph suspension, again it's a marriage of craftsmanship and knowledge from around the globe. All in the common search of speed and of competition. Finally, we're in Sweden, we must do a Swedish car, and the Volvo 122S is that car. Sporting a mild 60's custom look with Foose wheels, this wagon has far more appeal than any Volvo you're used to. Dropped a touch, and with a period rack, there's still no question it's a Volvo when you get to the rear, but true to the mild custom form, yet still solidly euro, the bored out B20 Engine with Weber Carbs more than doubles the original horsepower.
Nostalgia fest is a garden of variety. No two cars alike, yet all amazing. It's hard to know where to look first!
