Abide with me - Organ Hymn Series #7

Описание к видео Abide with me - Organ Hymn Series #7

Abide with me is the seventh hymn in our Organ Hymn Series. It is one of the most moving hymns, with the words and tune written by those in times of great sorrow. H.F. Lyte (1793 - 1847), who was ordained into the Church of England, wrote the words while he lay dying from tuberculosis. The hymn is mainly based on Luke 24:29 in which the disciples ask Jesus to "Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent." Lyte died three weeks after writing the hymn, and it was sung for the first time at his funeral. Although he also composed a tune to it, the tune used today is EVENTIDE, composed by W.H. Monk (1823 - 89). W.H. Monk's widow recalled that he composed the tune in 10 minutes at “a time of great sorrow. Hand in hand we were silently watching the glory of the setting sun (our daily habit) until the golden hue had faded… Then he took paper and pencilled the tune which has gone all over the world.”

This is the seventh hymn in the Organ Hymn Series, where we not only perform some of the best-loved hymns in the world, but we also showcase a variety of hymns from different organs in churches throughout the UK.

The video was uploaded with kind permission from Christ Church, Wimbledon. The organ is a J.W. Walker & Sons electro-pneumatic organ built in 1898 and rebuilt in 1954.
