Want to plant a native tree with awesome fall color? Nyssa Sylvatica “Green Gable” is an improved variety of the Black Gum or Tupelo tree. This tree is strong, wind resistant, and will rival red maples in autumn with brilliant red, orange, and wine colored leaves. Summer leaves are glossy and deep green. The small bluish-black drupes (berries) are a favorite of birds and other wildlife. Don’t let the word “gum” scare you. No gum balls or hard see pods from this tree. Black Gums are drought tolerant but can also be planted in wet areas.
