During her journalism career, she extensively covered issues such as women's rights, armed struggles in Northeast India, caste conflict, and minority issues.

Gupta has worked extensively to stop the sex trade and improve the lives of prostitutes by providing education for their children and helping women secure corporate jobs. She continues to write on sex trafficking and women's rights for publications including Open Democracy, Pass Blue, CNN, Times of India, The Hindu, and The Guardian. Her efforts have made a significant impact in red-light areas such as GB Road in Delhi, Sonagachi in Kolkata, and Kamathipura in Mumbai.
