Fingerprints are the dermal ridges present in our hands and fingers. Fingerprints also present in toes and sole. Fingerprints are determined by two factors. Genetics and the environment of the foetus. Humans have three basic fingerprint patterns: Arch, Loop and Whorl. Loop is the commonest pattern in 65% individuals. The thickness of the ridges, spaces in between and the line directions were determined by the environmental factors faced by the foetus in womb. A 6-7 weeks foetus has volar pads in the hands, which develops into fingerprints. Complete formation of fingerprints will be seen in 10 week foetus.
Skin has three layers. The middle layer grows faster than others. During its growth, it undergoes frictional ridges which results in the foldings of the skin called fingerprints. Fingerprints are permanent throughout our life. Hence they are used in Automated Fingerprint Identification system such as Biometrics Identification.
