Withering (Québec) — Demo II — 2024

The third record of this Québécoise duo.

In this latest offering, the band appears to be refining their approach, merging the haunting melancholy of their debut with the more aggressive tendencies showcased in their second release, "Consigned To Oblivion”. However, this second demo stands out as the least harsh and most introspective work to date, signalling a subtle yet impactful shift in their evolving sound.

While the previous EP, marked a departure towards a more orthodox black metal style;drawing inspiration from both Pagan Hellfire and Forteresse, or even Autarcie. This time Withering returned to a softer sound. The relentless aggression and raw intensity that characterised their last work, subsided and now tempered by serene, melancholic instrumental or synth passages, also present on the debut. These moments of beauty and introspection are woven seamlessly into the fabric of the album, also seen on the second track and the outro, creating a dynamic and emotionally resonant listening experience.

Withering demonstrates a maturity in their songwriting, crafting a sound that can be seen as deeply personal and more evocative, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the emotional landscape that Withering so expertly creates.

This evolution is a fascinating journey to witness. It is a record that sees this duo embracing a more nuanced and dynamic approach to their music, one that is both a continuation of their previous work and a step into new territory.
