KWS: Beat the heat – progress in bean breeding

As an open field crop, beans have to withstand numerous challenges. How can we still succeed in breeding fresh, green, crunchy and tasty varieties? One key to success for KWS is to focus on strong disease resistance combined with high yield. Because diseases can lead to high yield losses in beans. In the course of climate change, tolerance to heat is also becoming increasingly important: "High disease resistance can indirectly increase yields. Heat and drought tolerance are also important for preserving yields. It´s a challenge to breed these complex, interrelated traits," explains Gerthon van de Bunt, Senior Plant Breeder Beans.
