The Bur oak is a massive tree with an equally large native range. It thrives throughout Northeast Ohio and tolerates high pH clay soils better than most other oak species. Bur oak (Quercus macrocarpa) also hybridizes with other members of the white oak group - including the southern live oak (Quercus virginiana), producing a semi-evergreen tree that can tolerate harsh climates.
