Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
This ball is made in America, and you're going to know that. The all new Pride Liberty is now the 4th release within the moderately successful pride line, each of which has featured the mid-performance tier Dominion asymmetric core. However, New to the line and to Motiv as a whoke is the Dynamic Propulsion Hybrid coverstock finished to 4000 Grit Laser Scanned Solid out of the box.
So with that combination of variables, and my mixed history in matching up with balls in the Pride line, I went with a simple 4.5x5.5x4.5 2LS layout. This is a pretty basic layout for me as it's really just up the middle with a slight focus on continuation. The hope is to trust the design intent of the ball and let it tell me what it wants to do, rather than me forcing it into being something specific.
AND ON THE LANES… The Pride Liberty and I really struggled to match up with each other right away. Something about the cover finish just did not match up with me until this one absorbed some oil and lane shined up a bit, but once it did, the shape improved dramatically. But the performance out of the box was honestly confusing, so if you're interested in adding this one to your arsenal, be sure you're ready to work it in. Don't quit on this one after 2 or 3 games.
And when you let it break in, I'd bet your favorite part about throwing it will be mine, and that's the carry on the off hits. Watch the pins. They never fly up, and that means that the pins can do some extra work for you. They say hit 'em thin and watch 'em spin, but once the cover broke in a bit, it felt like the pins were actually on my team which is a rare occurrence in this game.
But on the list of downsides, one stands out above the rest. This shape isn't convincingly awesome, and it certainly didn't wow me enough to be an instant add to my arsenal, so knowing how the original pride was best used, this Pride liberty may require a more skilled player to really unlock its potential. If you're looking for a first or second real bowling ball, I'd suggest looking elsewhere.
But if you have the chops to handle this kind of shape, I'd recommend pairing this one with an Evoke and Nuclear Forge. The Evoke will handle higher volumes of oil more effectively, and the Nuclear will let you open the lane up when the friction is fully developed. That leaves the Pride Liberty to do the work in that transition where you need to control the ball and catch a few good hits here and there.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Arctic Vibe from Hammer, and here I see a piece that's got a bit more cover strength, but less core strength, so the path to and through the pins is pretty different even though these pieces would fill a similar part of an arsenal. Bowlers with a higher rev rate will likely match up better with this Arctic Vibe as they'll be able to get further inside faster with it over the Pride Liberty.
Then I took a look at the Absolute Power from Storm, and here I see an option that's stronger overall than the Pride Liberty, but with less versatility. I see the Pride Liberty being used all over the lane and just going where the strikes are whereas the Absolute power is only great when you can keep it in front of you and let it roll, so players with less axis rotation will likely match up better with this one from Storm,
But with that, here's my recommendations on the types of players I think would match up well with the Pride Liberty from Motiv. The first is bowlers with a high axis of rotation, and especially those with a lower ball speed. The Pride liberty will balance control with continuation exceptionally well with these players as it won't jump sideways when it sees friction, but won't bleed off all its energy and still get through the pins.
The second recommendation is for two handers. I think high rev and high ball speed two handers will love this piece to combat urethane traffic in tournament play. The Pride Liberty will likely be able to stay in the friction, but still get off the spot in the presence of carry down so long as you have the rev rate to make that happen.
The all new Pride Liberty is certainly proud of where it comes from, and in the right hands, could be what you need to land your next honor score.
