Massive landslide destroys Teesta Stage 5 power station in Sikkim

A major landslide in Sikkim has destroyed the power station of NHPC's 510 MW Teesta Stage 5 dam in Balutar. The hill next to the power station had been unstable for several weeks, with minor slides occurring frequently. However, on Tuesday morning, a significant portion of the hill gave way, leading to the collapse of the power station.

No casualties have been reported since the power station had been evacuated days earlier due to the ongoing threat. Workers nearby captured the landslide on their phones.

The Teesta Stage 5 dam was already out of service following the October 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood, which caused flash floods that severely damaged the dam. Reconstruction efforts were underway when the landslide occurred.
