A proper builder's breakfast

Описание к видео A proper builder's breakfast

A call out to the same place featured in our toilet tripping video from June and where we have a new fault to find, only now some new electrical work has gone in as part of an extension. Coincidence? Or could this dog’s dinner be a builder’s breakfast? Hmmm... I wonder…

Yes, we informed the homeowner we were getting this one on camera so that we couldn’t be accused of any untoward meddling by the builder who has energised new circuits installed with all the workmanship of a boiled potato. Here, I’ve listed some of the basic regulatory non-compliances as we’ve gone along so that you can play the fun game of looking them up for yourselves, but it should be noted that the regulations identified are not necessarily exhaustive, indeed if you believe I’ve missed out any that are relevant to the horrors evident herein, feel free to pipe up in the comments.

In my telephonic argument with the asshat who performed this work, he not only angrily stated he was an electrician (snort!) but that he “does loads of work for the Council!” Oddly enough, I’ve heard that before - like council work is supposed to be some kind of badge of honour or high accreditation. I’m not sure why anyone would think they’re the dogs-bollocks by being able to say “I do low-cost repairs to cack social housing and cash-strapped public buildings for a bunch of public sector layabouts in cheap Tesco suits who haven’t the first clue about whether the workmanship is competent or not!” Still, he was sporting such as a chufty badge for whatever he thought it was worth, yet on my impressed-o-meter which has a calibrated scale of “so-f*cking-what” all the way up to “allow-me-to-give-you-oral-sex-right-now”, his boasting scored a lowly “piss-off-you-clown” which, needless to say, is waaaay down toward the bottom end.

If he can’t see what’s wrong with his work, then he’s ignorant at best. Unfortunately, he’ll likely kill someone else rather than himself as that generally seems to be the way the world works.

Anyway, you don’t need me to tell you this guy is a clueless liability, and you don’t need to hear any defence he may have for why he left this installation in the condition we found it in. The cold, hard facts are that numerous violations to BS7671 were evident in his work, and yet that hadn’t stopped him from energising it for a period of days. He’d left the installation in a more dangerous condition than before he started and he should never have made live any wiring that was not RCD protected, in contact with non-electrical services, sporting exposed basic insulation, lacking CPC continuity on live cabling, opened live parts to exposure in the consumer unit and with an insulation resistance fault introduced through his own cack-handedness that left this family home tripping off whenever high current loads were in use.

As for twisting cores and ringing a three-outlet circuit in a tiny extension… well, back to school with you sonny as you obviously haven’t been to a training college of any kind anytime recently, and for goodness sake, take a peek inside BS7671 you complete dickhead.

One thing I would say is that we ourselves have ballsed-up here as what we should have done to limit our own liability was ascertain at the CU that the fault was on the new wiring, disconnected that new wiring, plugged the CU gaps and walked away leaving the original installer to perform the fautfinding and to accept the responsibility of re-energising their circuits.
