Eastern American Toads (Anaxyrus americanus) breed in early spring in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The female lays long strings of eggs which will become tadpoles in about a week, if fertilized by a male. These amphibians are primarily nocturnal, and eat insects and small invertebrates. During the day, they burrow under leaves, stones, or other forms of cover.
