What a rad How To this turned out to be!! We had this one written up and we we're planning out exactly where we were gonna shoot the intro and...and this crew rolls through and nearly break themselves off right in front of us! I knew what had to happen and raced down the trail to see if I could get these guys involved in a real time steep lip coaching experiment.

Imagine my surprise when I realize it's Ty from @ty'srides! I met Ty about 15 months back on a random ride around Bentonville. He and his boys were out cruising and I showed them around some local hot spots. I didn't realize Ty was filming the entire time and he posted this video on his channel:

I was pretty pumped to have the opportunity to try this experiment out and it was even cooler to be able to do it with Ty. He's a pretty rad dude as you can see in the video and seeing the progress he made in such a short period of time was incredibly gratifying.

Alright, let's get down to it. What do you do with steep lips. Well, you make sure you have the jump basics dialed! Re watch the jump video we did a few months back to help you get your mind right for steep take offs like these.
This new spot here in the OZ Trails is super legit! BUT, it's already seen a few people roll away in an ambulance and it's because they weren't prepared for the dynamics of these lips. I've sat here multiple times and watched NUMEROUS people roll up to the jumps
1- TOO FAST
2- HIPS BACK
3- NOT PREPARED FOR THE ABRUPT TRANSITION

Jump basics still apply here:
- Stop pedaling early
- Get your pedals level so you have a firm base to stand on
- Have the majority of your weight in your feet and hold yourself up with your core
- Stay relaxed

Here's where some adjustments need to happen.
FIRST - Slow down. Many people come ripping into jumps like this and get BUCKED! When you bring in a ton of speed you close the window of time to deal with what the energy created on the take off. Come in slower IF IT'S A TABLETOP like these and just work on getting comfortable with how the transition of the lip feels. If it's a decent sized double, maybe think about getting comfortable on a different obstacle.

SECOND - Work on how dynamically you load into the take off and really get a feel for the timing. If you load late then you'll drive too hard into the takeoff and dissipate energy. If you load too early then you'll be at a greater risk of the bike coming up into you violently as it rolls up the takeoff.
However, if you get the timing right and you aren't ready for it, this could also cause some damage. YOU NEED SOLID REPS TO ACQUIRE GOOD DATA!

THIRD - Slowly bring up the speed AND work on how aggressively you load into the takeoff. Understand that you don't always need more speed. You might just need to drop into that athletic position a little harder and open up a bit more dynamically.

Last thing to remember is that the window gets smaller very quickly when you bring in more speed. Be prepared to start dissipating some of that energy, AKA Scrubbing, so you don't shoot into orbit!

I really hope that shed some light on those potentially broken collarbone inducing takeoffs that are hiding out there ;)

PEACE OUT DUMPERS!!
