Linlithgow Palace is situated in the attractive West Lothian town of Linlithgow, around 15 miles west of Edinburgh. It was, at one time, one of the the principal royal residences in the 15th and 16th centuries, but eventually fell in to disuse with the Union of the Crowns in 1603.

Linlithgow Palace is surrounded by beautiful parkland (Linlithgow Peel) and overlooks Linlithgow Loch, which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), teeming with bird life and a firm favourite with local fishermen. Linlithgow Palace, although a ruin, is very well preserved with plenty to discover and explore.

It's famously the birth place of Mary, Queen of Scots and will keep all keen historians very busy! During the summer, the adjacent medieval 15th-century St Michael's Church is also well worth a visit. The loch and parkland are a great place for bird spotting, so take a picnic and make a day of it. Alternatively walk down in to the high street, where there are lots of good coffee shops and cafes, where you can enjoy a good bite to eat. The Palace is open all year round and there's a small admission fee to get in. It's one of my favourite places in Scotland and well worth a visit.
