Mount Ernest Mid Traverse Hike

Описание к видео Mount Ernest Mid Traverse Hike

MT Ernest, Barney little brother was never a peak I have considered climbing because lets be honest if I'm driving 2 hours to do a mountain scramble it will be BARNEY!, however in recent weeks I've seen a group post their Ernest hike up on facebook and as they described it extremely hard and difficult with hard scramble and bring rope, really peaked my interest. So I'm one who can never turn down a hard scramble and was excited to give this hiking trail a go.

Hike Review: 3 out 5

Like most hiking trails in Mt Barney it all starts with a long walk up to the base of the mountain before the scrambling beings, Ernest was no different just consider that the warm up, the turn off looked like I was in for a serious bush bashing however was quite please there was a trail for pretty much the whole way up. However I was a bit disappointed with the scrambling as I had high expectations but I was left asking myself where the hard part? while standing approx 10m below the summit ridge line. Everything to this point was pretty much straight forward and going seemly well thinking that only the easy walk back down to the car was left, however to my surprise the simple trail I described in the video was anything but simple =).. at times it was easy to loose the trail on top of the ridge line and you would need to constantly check your gpx file to make sure you are on track, to my surprise the best part of this hike in my opinion was the pinnacle climb with the views of the country on one side and Barney and Maroon on the other, it was amazing, followed by a pretty tough downclimb as I missed the trail in which got my heart pumping and made up for the disappoint scramble I was expecting. Then came the slip and slide gully, boy Oh Boy was that steep, it was hard going but not overly tough just take your time and you should be able to get to the bottom safely, from that point on it was a simple bush bash back to Barney main trail however I was over that and decided to do a bit of creek hoping before heading back to the car. Overall not a bad hike but what won me over was the amazing view on top of the pinnacle which by far exceeded my expectations and much better than what you can get on top of Mt Barney.

Hike Summary:
Distance: 12.38 km
Elevation: 799m
