Whilst there are a few tales around the origin of the masala dosae, many believe that it was first made in the temple town of Udupi and at Mitra Samaj, an eatery that in its Brahmanical traditions uses no onion and garlic in its preparations since its inception in 1949. Today, however, Mitra Samaj is perhaps more known for its Buns and Goli Bajje, scrumptious snacks I tried on my earlier visit to film a Gourmet On The Road episode. This time though, I was keen to introduce the boss to the delicious wonders of this 73-year-old Udupi tiffin house. This breakfast outing also turned into an impromptu meet-up with viewers from across the country, fitting in its temple complex setting where people from all walks of life converge in faith.
