Walter Ostanek - Canada's Polka King with his band playing at the Saxonia Hall in Aylmer, Ontario on Oktoberfest. This is a recording of the later part of Saturday evening. There were also several folk dance performances by the Saxonia Dancers. The Saxonia club gets its name from the Transylvania Saxons - an ethnic German minority in beautiful Siebenburgen, Transylavnia, who have an interesting history - currently part of Romania. Walter Ostanek is a legend in the polka scene in North America and has been playing in Canada and internationally for decades. His easy-going style of music is enjoyable to listen and dance to. He was already well-known in 1989 when the 5th Estate made a documentary about him. He has somewhat of a cult following with many long-time fans. There have been many famous Slovenian polka music stars over the years, with the style of music being very popular in Slovenia along with folk dancing and other traditions.

Transylvania is a very beautiful part of Romania, with a long and rich history. The Siebenburgen (7 Castles) Saxons are ethnic Germans who settled and developed the area going back over 800 years. In its history it has been part of Hungary and the Austrian empire. Around 2,000 years ago it was the heart of the Kingdom of Dacia-Getia, and much earlier it had been the center of the earliest civilization in Europe and in the world, of the Cucuteni-Trypillia 4,600-3700 BC. There have been a number of early civilizations and cultures in the area going back thousands of years long into pre-history.
Transylvania was settled by Germans after the area had been depopulated following the various Mongolian and Turkish-Ottoman invasions of Europe. It had been a frontier area for centuries, suffering from frequent raids by Turks and Tartars - seeking human captives for their slave markets and anything else they could plunder - up until the mid 1700s, and that is the reason for the fortified churches and settlements in the region. However bad it was during those centuries, with millions of people taken away and killed with devastating raids, the communist period was much worse. Post-WW2 with the soviet occupation of Romania and marxist dictatorship, it became a difficult time for the Transylvania Saxons because they had been historically a privileged elite, turned into a class enemy according to that ideology which was subject to deportations, and repressions. Many of those who remained and suffered through the communist period desired to leave as is typical of people in marxist countries which produce a lot of refugees. After the fall of communism Germany invited ethnic Germans in eastern Europe and Russia to return to Germany and that became the near end of a lot of centuries long established communities, since a large number of people in communist and post-communist countries are often thinking of ways of getting out somehow to escape the miserable conditions and low wages, and jump at any opportunity to leave. The results were predictable. Instead Germany should have helped those communities financially in situ with development assistance and encouraged more trade. The beautiful historic Transylvania Saxon villages and towns are still there and are worth a tourist visit, but unfortunately very few of the ethnic Germans who build them remain in the area.
