African Crops For the Future E06: Pfende/Inqodi/Tiger Nut (Cyperus esculentus)

It's weird how there are plants we see almost every day but know next to nothing about. We even have a name for this - we call these unrecognised plants "Cinderella species". One especially common but underutilised plant in Africa is Cyperus esculentus, the yellow nutsedge, aka the Tiger Nut. What's so special about this grass? Why is a grass called a "nut"? And when was the last time anyone saw a tiger in Africa?! To find out more, Gus (the African Plant Hunter) waded into a vegetable garden in north-eastern Zimbabwe for a closer look at this enigmatic and highly nutritious edible plant.
